Conrad-Johnson is a high-end audio electronics manufacturer. It is based in Fairfax, Virginia. Dr. Lewis Johnson and Dr. William Conrad founded the Company in the year 1977. It was in the mid-seventies that two economists and close friends who were stern audiophiles decided to speculate on sonic differences. They were disappointed and not satisfied with the commercially available audio equipment in that time. They were also puzzled and challenged seeing their own audio systems by the differences in the sonic components. They wondered how two classic tube systems sound so dissimilar? They used to think perhaps that the features of each be combined in some way. So these two men started to investigate and develop filtering a vacuum-tube preamplifier.
Lewis Johnson and William Conrad introduced the vacuum tube preamplifier. The product was recognised and Conrad and Johnson entered into the audio industry. The PV-1 a vacuum tube preamplifier was the company’s first product. The chief factor of conrad-johnson designs were the basic methodology taking shape in the development their first preamplifier. With this methodology new products were developed and also been graded amongst the best musically satiating. Their first power amplifier MV75 was introduced in 1978 to guarantee the long term possibility of conrad- johnson design. A high power 200 watt per channel named as the Premier One which was an all tube power amp was introduced in the year 1979. This product was recognized as the finest sounding amplifier of the decade in an issue of The Absolute Sound Magazine. In 1983 two products namely the Premier Three and PV5 which was an all-tube preamplifier was a great success. In amplifiers an all tube 275 watt mono amp, Premier Eight sustained conrad-johnson’s statement to the state of the art performance. In 1997 the all tube line-stage preamplifier which was Anniversary Reference Triode Preamplifier (ART) was known as the best sounding line-stage accessible by several industries.
